New CEO Ternus opens first Apple keynote with AI-focused pitch

At the beginning of Apple’s Surprise and Shine event on Wednesday, the company’s new CEO, John Ternus, outlined the AI strategy the firm intends to pursue. Ternus, taking over from former CEO Tim Cook who now serves as executive chairman, made it clear that Apple believes the iPhone already represents the best AI device and is more focused on data privacy than its competitors. His comments provide insight into how Apple plans to compete in the age of AI.

Ternus introduced the concept of an "intelligent personal hub," the ideal AI device that Apple envisions. This device should have a deep understanding of a user's personal context, be constantly present, and feature a powerful processor capable of running AI models locally on the device as well as cloud connectivity for additional computational power.

Additionally, the ideal AI device should have a large display, high-quality cameras and microphones for sensing and hearing the world around it, and possess an extended battery life. Ternus also stressed the importance of an intuitive user interface, easy to use without requiring significant learning, and seamless integration with other devices, apps, and services, creating an integrated experience.

Apple’s emphasis on data privacy sets it apart in the AI race, according to Ternus. The CEO stressed that others view users' personal data as something to collect and store, but Apple sees it differently. Ternus explained that Apple Intelligence runs on device whenever possible to protect user privacy.
