Navi Mumbai: MSEDCL Detects ₹31.31-Lakh Power Theft In 78 Cases During Airoli Inspection Drive

On September 9, 2026, the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) uncovered power theft in 78 cases during an inspection drive in unregulated buildings in Airoli and neighboring areas of Navi Mumbai. The theft, worth Rs 31.31 lakh, involved 143,063 units of electricity. The operation, which took place on September 3, involved seven special teams of over 55 officers and employees who inspected electricity connections, meters, and usage patterns at 105 premises.

In addition to the confirmed theft cases, MSEDCL identified 22 suspected cases under Section 135 of the Electricity Act, 2003, which are currently under surveillance. Three cases were classified under Section 126 for unauthorized electricity use, while two were assessed as routine inspections. The highest amount of power theft was found at Smashanbhumi Garden, where two consumers stole 39,629 units, amounting to Rs 9.63 lakh.

Other notable instances include Mauli Apartment with theft of 26,755 units worth Rs 5.33 lakh, Krishna Heights with 5,530 units stolen valued at Rs 1.20 lakh, and Matoshree Apartment with 12,956 units stolen worth Rs 2.54 lakh. Sanjay Patil, Chief Engineer of Bhandup Urban Circle, emphasized that power theft imposes financial burdens on honest consumers and hampers the power distribution system.

MSEDCL assured continued action against power theft, asserting that legal measures will be taken against those found guilty. They also encouraged consumers to report power theft and other malpractices.
