N. Korean troops cross MDL more than 20 times in Aug.

North Korean troops crossed the heavily guarded border between North and South Korea more than 20 times in August, according to military officials. The intrusions occurred on the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) in the eastern sector for the first time during mid-August, and they have continued to happen frequently since then. The total number of MDL crossings by North Korean soldiers in August surpassed the 17 recorded cases throughout all of 2025.

Military officials stated that the border crossings were primarily due to North Korean troops performing tasks related to border fortification in areas that were still under construction. A Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) official noted that the intrusions did not suggest any changes in North Korean troop activities or indicate unusual behavior.

Since 2024, North Korea has intensified its border fortification efforts by erecting barbed-wire fences and placing landmines along the border, following Kim Jong-un's declaration in late 2023 that inter-Korean relations would be treated as those between two hostile states.
