Mumbai: Kurla Woman Delivers Premature Baby At Home, Carried To Hospital On Bedsheet After Alleged 108 Ambulance Delay

A woman in Kurla delivered her premature baby at home in Mumbai on September 9, 2026, around 4 AM. The family claims that Anjali Pawar went into labour suddenly and delivered the baby, who was bleeding. The family immediately contacted the 108 Ambulance service for medical assistance. However, according to Mayank Solanki, a neighbour and Pawar's self-proclaimed brother, the ambulance did not arrive promptly.

Solanki said he approached the Dr Anandi Bai Joshi Maternity Home, a civic-run hospital, requesting immediate assistance. The hospital staff informed him that medical personnel were not allowed to leave the hospital premises and suggested they bring the woman to the hospital on their own. The family then approached a nearby police outpost for help, but no immediate response was provided.

In a desperate attempt, the family, assisted by neighbours, used a bedsheet as a stretcher to carry the woman to the hospital. This incident has sparked concerns about the responsiveness of Mumbai's emergency medical services, especially in critical situations involving pregnant women and newborns. The family has demanded an inquiry into the delay of the ambulance and accountability from those responsible.

However, the allegations have not been independently verified. The Mumbai Municipal Corporation Health Committee Chairman, Harish Bhandirge, stated that he would look into the matter and take necessary action. Multiple attempts to contact the 108 Ambulance Service and the Public Health Department for comment were unsuccessful.
