MTN Nigeria reaches record 100.9m subscriber base

MTN Nigeria has achieved a record-breaking milestone by expanding its subscriber base to 100.86 million in July, according to data released by the Nigerian Communications Commission. This marks the first time an African telecommunications operator has crossed the 100 million-subscriber mark. The company added more than 2.2 million subscribers in July alone, bringing its total customer base to this historic level.

Prior to the enforcement of the National Identification Number and Subscriber Identification Module linkage policy, Nigeria's telecom market had been recovering from a decline in active lines. Overall mobile subscriptions in Nigeria reached 195.11 million in July, up from 192.23 million in June, representing a monthly increase of about 2.88 million lines.

However, this figure is still below the pre-enforcement peak of over 200 million subscriptions in October 2020 and October 2022. MTN Nigeria, led by CEO Karl Toriola, accounted for the majority of the increase, solidifying its position as the largest mobile network operator in Nigeria. With 51.7% of the country's active mobile subscriptions, MTN leads the market followed by Airtel with 34.3%, Globacom with 12.1%, and 9mobile with 1.9%.
