Moroccan woman not with Sheikh Gumi – Lawyer

A Moroccan woman, Khadija Diab, whose husband has been making claims about her whereabouts on social media, is not in contact with Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, according to her lawyer, Bilkisu Abdulrasheed Chedi. Chedi, Executive Director of Women Aware of Rights Initiative, confirmed that Khadija had been in Morocco since April 2026, after the organization facilitated an emergency travel document for her after her husband allegedly seized her international passport.

The lawyer clarified in a video shared on Dr Ahmad Gumi's verified Facebook page that the allegations regarding Khadija's presence with the scholar were false and unfounded, as it is not possible for a person to be in two countries simultaneously. Khadija returned to Morocco in April 2026, post which she spent about six months there and is currently with her family.

Her lawyer stated that Khadija's family informed the organization about her safe arrival in Morocco, where she was staying with them. Khadija had initially approached Women Aware of Rights Initiative in October 2025, alleging domestic abuse, inadequate feeding and maintenance, and an unlawful and unnatural conjugal relationship by her husband.

Following her allegations, the organization advised Khadija to undergo medical tests, which revealed that she had contracted sexually transmitted diseases. She subsequently decided she no longer wished to remain in the marriage due to emotional and physical abuse. A case was instituted at the Area Sharia Court in Kaduna on October 3, 2025, which was later adjourned to November 11, 2025, after the defendant's counsel filed a motion for reconciliation.

The legal proceedings faced delays due to the defendant changing lawyers, the judicial strike in Kaduna, and Khadija's emotional distress. The organization helped Khadija obtain a travel document from Morocco since her international passport was allegedly in her husband's possession. Moroccan immigration authorities confirmed her safe arrival, and the Moroccan Embassy in Nigeria also informed the organization of her arrival.

The case at the Daura Road Sharia Court was discontinued on June 10, 2026, while another case was filed in July seeking the dissolution of the marriage under Sharia law. Chedi urged the public to disregard claims that Khadija was being held by Gumi, stating her statement aimed to clear the air surrounding her whereabouts controversy.
