Mombasa Port sets new container handling record in push to cut vessel turnaround times

Nairobi, Kenya - The Port of Mombasa has achieved a new record in container handling, with 863 containers discharged from a single vessel in one shift. This accomplishment comes as part of the Kenya Ports Authority's (KPA) efforts to reduce vessel turnaround times and enhance the port's competitiveness as a regional trade hub. The record was set while handling the MV Aniello, which arrived at Berth No. 22 carrying 1,005 containers.

The discharge process, completed in just one and a half shifts, began around 3 p.m. and concluded at approximately 2:40 a.m.

Throughout the night, four teams comprising vessel planners, crane operators, truck drivers, yard personnel, and supervisors worked continuously to ensure a seamless cargo-handling operation. By 11 p.m., the teams had already discharged 863 containers, surpassing the port's previous single-shift record. KPA attributed the success to investments in equipment, technology, and workforce skills, as well as the efficient handling of large cargo volumes.

KPA CEO Captain William Ruto emphasized that the achievement highlights the port's ability to handle cargo efficiently and underlines its competitiveness in the global maritime logistics industry.

The record performance is crucial for shipping lines, as faster turnaround times can reduce operating costs, improve schedule reliability, and enhance service delivery. KPA noted that the gains are essential for East Africa's major maritime gateways as they compete for transit cargo serving the broader region. For Kenya, enhancing cargo handling at Mombasa is vital to lower logistics costs and improve supply chain efficiency.
