Missouri’s Trump-backed voting maps approved by federal panel challenged in supreme court

Missouri's congressional districts have been redrawn in a map that was backed by former President Donald Trump for the upcoming midterms. However, the new map has faced opposition and is now being challenged in the US Supreme Court by opponents who argue against the Republican-drawn boundaries. The case was brought forth by a group called People Not Politicians, and they made the request through an emergency filing following the decision made by US District Judge Stephen Clark.

Judge Clark's ruling on Tuesday threw Missouri's congressional elections into uncertainty just two months before the crucial midterms. This decision came after conservative Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh denied an emergency request from Missouri officials to use a redrawn congressional map that favored the GOP, allowing the state to revert back to the 2022 map.

The temporary restraining order, or TRO, issued by Judge Clark, temporarily prohibited the use of the old congressional maps for the November elections and resulted in Missouri employing the newly drawn districts, which are more favorable to Republicans.

This temporary order was established after the August primary elections and was quickly appealed to the Eighth US Circuit Court of Appeals. During the 2020 presidential election, Trump encouraged Republican-led states to redraw congressional districts in their favor, leading to a nationwide redistricting fight. Missouri joined other states in following Trump's directive, ultimately passing a revised map in September.

The changes targeted the fifth congressional district, which was held by Democratic Representative Emanuel Cleaver of Kansas City. The map reallocated portions of Cleaver's district to neighboring Republican-held districts and extended the remainder eastward into rural areas with a majority of Republican voters.
