Man shot dead in Sydney's west

A fatal shooting occurred in the carpark of a Sydney community centre in Punchbowl on Wednesday evening. Emergency services were dispatched to the scene following reports of a shooting. A vehicle was observed departing the location post the fatal incident, according to NSW police. Paramedics attended the man who was shot, but he succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The victim's identity remains unknown, as stated by the authorities. This incident transpired two days after Premier Chris Minns announced measures to address gangland violence in Sydney. The new legislation includes enhanced penalties for conspiracy to commit gang-related murder, with the maximum sentence being life imprisonment.

The government has consistently refuted claims of criminal gangs being "out of control" in the city, asserting that mistaken identity shootings of Joshua Macdonald and Marco Tapia, both last week, were not linked to organized crime. The new laws also enable police to issue interim serious crime prevention orders, restricting suspected individuals while the full order undergoes consideration by the state's supreme court.

Additional provisions under the new laws involve treating children's indictable offenses linked to organized crime as more severe, and expanding the scope of criminal activities punishable under the scheme to include public shootings and firebombings. Premier Minns emphasized the severity of the situation, stating that those involved in conspiring to arrange gangland murders should face life imprisonment.

He outlined a multi-pronged approach to dealing with criminal networks, targeting individuals who organize violence, those who facilitate it online, and those who carry out the acts. Police are urging the public to report any information regarding the Punchbowl incident to Campsie police station or Crime Stoppers.
