Maharashtra Signs ₹79,000 Crore MoUs With Torrent Power And JSW Energy For 4,200 MW Nuclear Power Projects

Maharashtra has inked two important Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with Torrent Power Ltd and JSW Energy Ltd for the development of a combined 4,200 MW nuclear power capacity. The total estimated investment for these projects is a staggering Rs 79,000 crore. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis highlighted that nuclear power has become a vital option for meeting the state's clean-energy needs, stating that it will provide the essential baseload power to support the state's renewable energy projects.

JSW Energy's proposed 2,800 MW project at Bhivbandar in Ratnagiri district will be implemented in two phases, each generating 1,400 MW, with an expected investment of Rs 44,000 crore and the potential to create 8,000 to 10,000 jobs. Torrent Power, on the other hand, is proposing a 1,400 MW nuclear project in Ratnagiri (or another location in the state), which is expected to attract around Rs 35,000 crore in investment and create approximately 1,700 jobs.

The Centre's approval of the 'SHANTI' law has allowed private investment in the nuclear energy sector, opening up significant opportunities for companies looking to enter this emerging field. Maharashtra is currently pursuing projects with a combined capacity of around 20,400 MW in nuclear energy, including proposals in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts.
