LAWMA to arrest Lagos residents patronising illegal roadside traders

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has announced that starting next week, residents who patronize illegal roadside traders will be arrested and prosecuted. Managing Director Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin revealed this at the LAWMA headquarters, stating the measure is part of a renewed enforcement strategy to combat illegal trading, improper waste disposal, and obstruction of public infrastructure in Lagos State.

Gbadegesin clarified that the law not only prohibits illegal street trading but also makes it an offence to buy goods from prohibited places. Those found guilty can face fines of N90,000, imprisonment for six months, or both. Illegal roadside and median markets contribute to blocked drains, worsened traffic conditions, and increased public health risks.

LAWMA is also enhancing waste collection in inner streets and communities surrounding previous dumping hotspots, while urging residents and businesses to patronize recognized markets and approved waste collection channels.
