King, Queen extend condolences to families of Sarawak helicopter crash victims

Health Minister Dzulkefly Ahmad confirmed that the Flying Doctor Service (FDS) will continue operations following the tragic helicopter crash in Ulu Baram, Sarawak, which claimed five lives. The service, established in the 1970s, is vital for delivering healthcare to remote communities. Speaking at a press conference, Dzulkefly emphasized the importance of strengthening the FDS, stating that the ministry will double down on its efforts to maintain the service.

The accident occurred when a BO-105 helicopter, carrying four health ministry employees and a pilot, crashed near the Long Lellang STOLport. All individuals on board perished in the incident. Senator RA Lingeshwaran called for an immediate grounding of helicopters of the same model while the crash's cause is investigated. However, Dzulkefly clarified that the FDS is contracted to private companies, as the ministry does not own the helicopters used in the service.

The ministry is currently gathering the maintenance history of the crashed helicopter and will provide it to relevant authorities. Health Director-General Dr Mahathar Abdul Wahab stated that the ministry will await input from authorities on the safety of helicopters currently in use for the FDS before making a decision. In the meantime, search and rescue efforts are underway at the crash site, coordinated by the Sarawak police and fire and rescue department, with Miri Hospital ready to receive the victims' remains.

The ministry pledged to provide support to the victims' families through its Sports and Welfare Club, as well as offering mental health and psychosocial assistance to the affected FDS personnel.
