King Charles classifies Harry and Meghan as ‘private citizens’

King Charles III has categorically stated that his son Harry and Meghan, his wife, are to be treated as "private citizens" and not as "working members of the royal family" after their recent return to the United Kingdom. The royal couple moved back from the United States in January 2020, following a rift within the royal family.

However, last month, they returned to the UK with their two children, Archie and Lilibet. In a letter issued by the Lord Chamberlain, the top official in the Royal Household, it was confirmed that the couple's status would be akin to private citizens, and they would not be addressed as His and Her Royal Highnesses. This decision was made to avoid confusion and to respect the couple's personal wishes regarding financial independence and privacy.

The letter also stated that the couple's charitable work remains a personal matter for them. Security concerns have been a topic of discussion regarding Harry and Meghan. Officially working royals, such as Charles, his wife Queen Camilla, Prince William, Catherine, Princess of Wales, and others, receive support from the Royal Household.

However, the Sussexes have reportedly enrolled their children in private schools in the Cotswolds region of England for the upcoming academic year. The Royal and VIP Executive Committee, an independent body overseeing security for politicians, royals, and others, has been monitoring the situation. Harry previously fought the ministry for upgraded security after moving away from royal duties in 2020, but lost the case.

However, with their return to the UK, the risk management board may reassess the level of security required for the couple.
