JPJ seizes 37 vehicles with extreme modifications, including RM150,000 exhausts, in Ops Ekstrem

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 9 — The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has seized 37 vehicles with extreme modifications, including air suspension systems, during Ops Ekstrem on Sunday. Director-General Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli announced that JPJ will hold onto the seized vehicles until legal action is taken against their owners and the vehicles are returned to their original state.

The operation, conducted between 1 am and 5 am in the capital, specifically along Jalan Raja Laut, inspected 156 vehicles, leading to action against 97 of them for various violations. Ramli emphasized that roads should not be a venue for showcasing extreme vehicle modifications that disrupt public order and endanger other road users.

He reported that 485 notices were issued for various infractions, with 97 involving non-compliant registration numbers, 66 concerning expired Motor Vehicle Licences, 57 lacking insurance coverage, 44 with tinted windows, and 11 for vehicle modifications. Exhaust-related violations accounted for 77 cases. The popularity of air suspension systems, costing between RM15,000 and RM25,000, has risen among those aged 20 to 30, who brought them from Borneo.

The expanding Ops Ekstrem operation will be rolled out nationwide beginning this week, with JPJ referring such modifications to the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living and the Royal Malaysian Customs Department to control the entry of illegal components and address unregistered workshops.
