Jigawa varsity rejects govt offer, threatens two-week warning strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Sule Lamido University in Kafin Hausa has rejected the Jigawa State Government's latest offer concerning university matters. They have announced a two-week warning strike beginning midnight on September 15, 2026, if their demands are not met. This decision was made at the 54th Regular Congress Meeting of the ASUU-SLUK branch on Tuesday.

The union expressed dissatisfaction with the government's proposal during their recent discussions on university issues. They stated that the congress would proceed with the warning strike unless the government addresses their demands satisfactorily. Should the government fail to act after the warning strike, the union threatened to implement a total, indefinite strike.

Key concerns raised by the union include the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) and outstanding promotion arrears to staff since 2024. The union requested that Sule Lamido University be exempt from the IPPIS system due to its perceived ineffectiveness in resolving the university's payroll problems. Furthermore, the union was critical of the government's stance on the two percent local government contribution to the institution.

The congress also reviewed a report on a recent ASUU Emergency National Executive Council meeting at the University of Abuja. They urged stakeholders to intervene and facilitate further negotiations with the government to resolve outstanding issues and prevent academic disruptions.
