Israel tells Britain to close East Jerusalem consulate within 30 days, sources say

South Africa is bolstering its case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) regarding the ongoing crisis in Gaza. The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco) has submitted a new dossier of information to assist the ICJ's Committee of Judges, who are tasked with monitoring the implementation of previous provisional measures.

Since a ceasefire was announced in August 2023, over 73,000 Palestinians have been killed and 174,000 injured in Gaza, with 46,000 survivors suffering severe injuries. The situation in Gaza has led to a threefold increase in miscarriage rates and Palestinians are suffering from a lack of water, healthcare, and other essential resources.

South Africa argues that Israel has not complied with the ICJ's provisional orders, which aim to protect Palestinians' rights under the Genocide Convention. Experts agree that Israel is committing genocide, citing statements by Israeli cabinet ministers and the clear intent demonstrated by the Israeli government.

If states ignore ICJ orders, the UN Security Council could take punitive measures, but this is unlikely due to the US veto power. However, the ICJ case is meant to increase pressure on Israel and influence public opinion to demand a change in its policies. Middle East analysts believe that the additional dossiers submitted by South Africa strengthen the original genocide case and could lead to further political moves against Israel.
