Here’s why you should not go to Diaz Beach in Mossel Bay anytime soon

Mossel Bay's popular Diaz Beach has been closed for safety reasons, pending a geotechnical assessment that revealed sections of the dune slope are unstable. The municipal manager warned the beach could face an evacuation order if engineers deem it necessary. It's strongly advised not to bypass barriers or enter restricted areas. The beach will stay closed until it is deemed safe.

Residents and visitors are urged to stay away from exposed infrastructure along the beach dune. The municipality is considering installing geotextile sandbags as a temporary measure to stabilize the dune and minimize the risk of further collapse. This could prevent damage to properties and infrastructure, as well as safeguard public safety. However, a permanent solution is being sought through a Basic Assessment process to determine the most appropriate coastal management strategy.

While the long-term solution is pending, MEC Anton Bredell signaled that it could involve removing the temporary sandbags or implementing sand replenishment, among other potential measures. The municipality and the Western Cape Government emphasize that coastal protection measures can impact the natural movement of sand, potentially leading to erosion, beach narrowing, and the eventual loss of the beach as a public amenity.
