Govt tightens JKIA controls as new systems, terminal expansion target greater efficiency

The Kenyan government has implemented stricter controls and efficiency measures at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to improve passenger processing and overall operational excellence. Among the initiatives, the Automatic Terminal Information Service (ATIS) is being deployed to better identify and manage both domestic and international flights. Terminals will feature a centralised system for airline check-in and passenger screening, with clear designations for arrivals and departures.

The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) is also constructing a new terminal, which will increase the airport's annual capacity for handling passengers to approximately 10 million. Additionally, the government is advancing the implementation of the Advanced Passenger Registration (APR) system to enhance information sharing and situational awareness. The related data-control facilities are expected to be operational within a month.

As part of the broader Sh154.2 billion JKIA modernisation programme, KAA has also initiated strict enforcement of baggage-handling procedures, requiring airlines to properly identify and process luggage as either passenger or cargo. Passengers are advised against attaching luggage to that of other individuals, and cargo must be processed through designated terminals in accordance with established procedures. Airlines found facilitating the movement of cargo outside authorised channels will face regulatory action.

Dr. Raymond Omollo, Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration, emphasized the importance of agencies fully implementing resolutions reached by the Border Control and Operations Coordination Committee (BCOCC). Dr. Belio Kipsang, Immigration Principal Secretary, stressed the need for inter-agency collaboration through an intelligence-led and coordinated approach to ensure national security while maintaining travel and trade.
