Govt Launches 10-Year Shark Conservation Plan

Pakistan has unveiled its inaugural 10-year national strategy for shark conservation and management, aiming to promote sustainable fisheries and safeguard marine biodiversity. Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry unveiled the National Plan of Action for the Conservation and Management of Sharks (NPOA-Sharks Pakistan 2025-2035) on Tuesday.

The plan is structured in three phases over the next ten years, administered by the Marine Fisheries Department and overseen by a multi-stakeholder National Advisory Committee. The initial five years are projected to require a funding range of $3.8 million to $5 million, which will be provided through government resources, international donor contributions, and private sector support.

The primary objectives of the plan are to rebuild shark populations, eliminate illegal finning, decrease bycatch fatalities, safeguard critical habitats, and enhance coastal livelihoods. It also outlines measures for intensified research, enhanced fisheries enforcement, and species-specific protections.

Key measures include implementing mandatory fins-naturally-attached regulations, establishing shark sanctuaries, and rehabilitating mangroves to protect habitats. The framework also incorporates community support for fishermen and collaboration with international entities, such as the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission.

Officials will track progress through annual metrics such as landing-site inspections, stock assessments, vessel monitoring, and bycatch reduction. Comprehensive evaluations will occur every three years. The plan encompasses sharks, rays, skates, and chimaeras inhabiting Pakistani waters, aligning with global fisheries and conservation standards.
