Ghana Sports Fund pledges inclusive facilities, support for young talents

The Administrator of the Ghana Sports Fund (GSF), Dr David Kofi Wuaku, has announced plans to establish a pension contribution scheme for retired Ghanaian athletes. This scheme aims to provide financial security for athletes after their active sporting careers. During a media engagement in Accra on September 9, Dr Wuaku explained that this initiative is crucial as many sports personalities face financial difficulties post-retirement.

Dr Wuaku highlighted that the GSF will identify athletes who have devoted their lives to representing Ghana and provide assistance to improve their welfare. He emphasized the Fund's intention to create a formal welfare system for all athletes, as most are not covered by SNNIT. Dr Wuaku noted that athletes would be prioritized under the Fund's welfare interventions, especially those facing financial and other challenges post-retirement.

Prof Koryoe Anim-Wright, the Board Chair of the GSF, assured that the process of identifying and supporting beneficiaries would be transparent and accountable. She promised appropriate measures to ensure accurate selection of beneficiaries and that assistance reaches those who genuinely need it. The GSF was established to mobilize resources for sports development and to improve the welfare of athletes and other sports professionals in Ghana.
