Garmin Drive GPS gets ultra-wide redesign — with EV routing, live traffic and voice controls for your older car

Garmin has completely revamped its Drive automotive GPS unit, incorporating an ultra-wide display, enhanced connectivity, and specialized tools for electric vehicle (EV) drivers. The new device comes in 7.1-inch and 8.8-inch sizes, featuring a high-resolution ultra-wide display with edge-to-edge glass. Garmin claims the sleek and unobtrusive design is intended to minimize visual obstruction while providing a clear view of the route and upcoming road information.

The revamped Drive models offer numerous connected features, including the ability to select routes and destinations using voice commands and touch controls via a connected smartphone or the Garmin Drive app. These devices can also display upcoming traffic lights, stop signs, and other potential hazards such as sharp curves, speed limit changes, and school zones.

EV drivers will particularly benefit from the new device's dedicated charging information, which includes locating available charging stations along a route based on charging power and live availability. Meanwhile, drivers of gasoline-powered vehicles can utilize the connected Garmin Drive app to access dynamic fuel prices.

The Drive units are available in both 8.8-inch and 7.1-inch sizes, with suggested retail prices starting at $299.99 / £249.99 (or around AU$415). Garmin has also introduced optional packs for professional drivers and specific vehicle requirements. The Truck and Camper Pack, priced at $149.99 / £129.99 / (around AU$208), adds features like routing based on vehicle dimensions, warnings for steep grades and weight restrictions, and access to motorhome and caravan park directories.
