‘Filmmaking may change in 3-4 years due to AI’: Kiran Das on turning director with Unmadham

Kiran Das, the editor turned director, has expressed his fascination with filmmaking and its potential transformation in the next few years due to AI advancements. Unmadham, the film he directed, differs from his previous works as it incorporates surrealism, fantasy, and psychological layers. Das, who was not initially inclined towards directing, was inspired by the unique and challenging nature of Unmadham's story.

He began preparations for the film while working as the editor, and took over as the director when he felt the need to create a movie in the way he had been working for years. Unmadham features a long hallucination sequence, which Das had planned meticulously, following the traditional editing process he had learned during his time as an editor.

Despite the film's theatrical run, Das believes that a movie's success is ultimately determined by the audience's reception and that there is no guarantee of a film's longevity or cult status.
