FDS team in Sarawak helicopter crash was serving remote communities

The Flying Doctor Service (FDS) team that was involved in the helicopter crash near Long Lellang was actively serving remote communities in Sarawak, according to the Ministry of Health. The FDS has been operating in Sarawak since 1973, providing essential healthcare services to residents in areas that are difficult to reach. The team delivers medicines, vaccines, and conducts medical evacuation missions for critically ill patients, ensuring that these remote communities maintain access to quality healthcare.

Currently, there are 97 localities in Sarawak that require FDS services, which are mainly located in Kapit, Miri, and Limbang regions. These areas often face logistical challenges, with limited road networks and are far from adequate transportation facilities. Despite these difficulties, the FDS maintains a consistent schedule of monthly visits to these remote areas, though some locations receive service every two months, depending on operational capacity.

The FDS medical team consists of a doctor, nurses, and an assistant medical officer to provide comprehensive care to patients. The Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia reported that the helicopter, carrying five people including the pilot, crashed while performing an FDS mission near the Long Lellang Short Take-Off and Landing Airport.

The helicopter departed from Miri, carrying a pilot, a medical officer, an assistant medical officer, and two nurses who were on official duty. The cause of the incident has not been confirmed, and search and rescue operations, involving medical personnel and the Fire and Rescue Department, are currently underway.
