Failed? This Karnataka university will let you retake exam when you’re ready

The Karnataka university, Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), is set to introduce a new "demand-based" re-exam system for engineering students who fail a subject. This system, scheduled to be implemented from the next academic session in April-May 2027, will allow students to request a re-exam based on their readiness, rather than waiting months to appear for a supplementary exam.

Students can choose the exam date, even request exams on public holidays, and receive their results within 24 hours. The university, which oversees 220 engineering colleges with approximately 3 lakh students, aims to make exams more convenient for students. Prof. S Vidyashankar, VTU's Vice-Chancellor, stated that VTU will conduct re-exams based on demand, regardless of the number of students wishing to take the exam.

The new system will use a 500-600 paper question bank, with question papers generated using artificial intelligence. Until now, failing students had to wait six months or more to reappear for exams.
