EPL: Panel rules Arsenal wrongly denied penalty against Aston Villa

The Premier League's Key Match Incidents Panel has determined that Arsenal midfielder Bruno Guimaraes should have been awarded a penalty against Aston Villa after he was fouled by Ian Maatsen. The panel further stated that Maatsen should have received a second yellow card and been sent off for the incident. It occurred during stoppage time in the eighth minute of the match when Arsenal led 1-0.

Guimaraes was about to shoot when Maatsen made a desperate attempt to prevent the Brazilian international from scoring. The panel of five unanimously agreed that referee Jarred Gillett made an on-field error by failing to award the penalty, and that video assistant referee James Bell also missed the intervention. The KMI Panel highlighted that "clear contact was made on the attacker's standing leg" and that Maatsen "made no contact with the ball." The panel concluded that the challenge was reckless, thus warranting a second caution.
