Enugu’s Palm Plantations Come Alive as Firm Commences Commercial Production of Palm Oil, Commits $2.2m for Expansion

• To launch vegetable oil, olein, stearin, palm kernel oil, and satchet palm oil • Mbah lauds revitalisation of dormant assets, reaffirms support for investors Emmanuel Ugwu-Nwogo in Umuahia As

Enugu State's palm plantations have regained vitality after the commencement of commercial palm oil production by Enugu United Palm Products Limited (UPPL). The firm, a public-private partnership between Pragmatic Palms Limited and the Enugu State Government, has initiated the production of vegetable oil, olein, stearin, palm kernel oil, and satchet palm oil. UPPL's Managing Director, Prof George Nwangwu, reported on the progress of the firm's operations during a briefing with Governor Mbah.

The company has revitalized dormant plantation assets in Ezeagu, Uzo-Uwani, and Oji River Local Governments, including Ibite-Olo, Umulokpa, and Ugwu-Oba. UPPL has cleared the plantations, pruned the trees, and replanted over 1,000 hectares of land. The firm is also investing heavily in processing and value addition by installing mills and refining the palm oil produced.

The company produces a branded palm oil named "EVOP", which is sold in open markets and supermarkets across Nigeria. Within two weeks, satchet EVOP palm oil will be launched in the market.

The governor lauded the partnership between Enugu State Government and Pragmatic Palms Limited as a model for other regions to emulate, highlighting the potential for employment creation, economic growth, and development of the state's agricultural value chain.
