Early player exodus is depleting Ghana Premier League, says President Mahama

Ghana's President John Dramani Mahama has voiced concern over the early departure of talented footballers from the domestic league, which he believes is degrading the quality of the Ghana Premier League. This warning came during a visit to the country's leaders by Ampem Darkoa, Nations FC and Medeama SC, who had recently secured spots in CAF inter-club competitions.

Mahama highlighted the trend of young players moving abroad shortly after gaining prominence in the national league, often to European scouts. He criticized the practice of selling off promising players too soon, stating that it erodes the strength of the local league. The president argued that the departure of such talents deprives clubs of building competitive squads that can maintain the league's high standard.

This situation poses a significant challenge to the long-term growth of football in Ghana, as clubs often lose crucial players just as they start to gain traction and gain support. While player transfers to foreign leagues offer financial benefits, Mahama advocates for a more balanced approach, allowing young players to mature and develop within the domestic system before pursuing overseas opportunities.
