Debt drives repeat two-pot retirement withdrawals among middle-income South Africans

The South African government and the country itself are embroiled in a long-standing legal dispute over the fate of items once belonging to Nelson Mandela. The government's Heritage Resources Agency (Sahra) is attempting to prevent the auction of 29 personal belongings from the former President, including his ID book used to cast his first vote in 1994 and several flamboyant shirts.

The Heritage Resources Agency asserts that these items hold immense historical significance, comparable to the English Magna Carta, as they symbolize the seismic political and societal transformation that occurred during Mandela's leadership. However, Makaziwe Mandela, the President's daughter, contends that auctioning off these items, which are deeply personal and cherished by the Mandela family, would enable them to construct a "garden of remembrance" at her father's ancestral home in Qunu, Eastern Cape.

Sahra's legal position has been overturned by lower courts, yet the government continues its fight. The auction house has suggested a price tag of over $150,000 (approximately R2.4 million) for the ID book alone, a sum that could potentially fund the desired memorial project. However, the question remains whether the historical value of these items justifies such a price when there are numerous individuals or entities willing to contribute towards building the memorial.
