Court relief to DU student charged with NSA to be challenged: Solicitor General

The Solicitor General, Tushar Mehta, has announced that the Allahabad High Court's decision quashing National Security Act (NSA) charges against Delhi University student Aakriti Chaudhary will be contested. Mehta informed the Supreme Court bench that the high court's judgement would be challenged, though he did not specify the petitioner.

The Solicitor General made this statement while addressing a matter where an executive magistrate issued a notice to a student from Gautam Buddha University in connection with a protest. Mehta clarified that the notice was issued by an executive magistrate and not the District Magistrate, leading to a surge of queries following the court's comments.

The Chief Justice of India, Surya Kant, also mentioned a case of a student who was detained during an agitation and subsequently released. The Allahabad High Court quashed the detention and awarded compensation to Aakriti Chaudhary on September 2, 2022, warning against bureaucratic overreach and the potential for an "Orwellian Dystopia" in Uttar Pradesh.
