CM Mohan Yadav sees water cannon video, Madhya Pradesh police order inquiry into action on intern doctors

Videos circulating on Monday displayed young medical interns being soaked by a water cannon in Bhopal. The incident involved Hamidia Hospital interns demanding a significant increase in their stipend, from approximately Rs 14,000 to Rs 30,000. Some protesters sustained injuries during the police's water cannon action. The state's Chief Minister, CM Mohan Yadav, is now seeking an investigation into the police's use of the water cannon.

The Bhopal Police Commissioner, Sanjay Kumar, appointed Deputy Commissioner of Police Vikas Sahwal to lead the impartial inquiry. The inquiry aims to uncover the facts surrounding the incident, including any potential misconduct. Police Commissioner Vikas Sahwal stated that the investigation will be comprehensive and impartial, examining all aspects and parties involved.

The incident began when interns staged a protest at Hamidia Hospital, requesting a substantial increase in their monthly stipend. The Federation of All India Medical Association supported their demand, asserting that the current stipend was insufficient given the hardships faced during internships. The protest escalated when some protesters attempted to bypass barricades leading to CM Yadav's residence, prompting the deployment of the water cannon.

Police maintained that the protesters escalated the situation by moving towards the emergency gate. One intern reportedly required medical attention after being hit by the water cannon.
