CE expresses sorrow over Tung Chee-hwa's passing

Chief Executive John Lee conveyed deep sorrow over the demise of Hong Kong's inaugural Chief Executive, Tung Chee-hwa, who passed away at the venerable age of 89. In his statement, Lee praised Tung's exemplary leadership that ensured Hong Kong's seamless reunification with the motherland and the successful implementation of the "One Country, Two Systems" policy.

Lee highlighted Tung's adept handling of Hong Kong during the Asian financial crisis, steering the city towards remarkable economic recovery. Lee emphasized Tung's foresight in cultivating economic connections with the mainland, which laid a robust foundation for Hong Kong's competitive edge. The Chief Executive noted that Tung's impact was exceptionally significant, and Tung continued to serve the nation as Vice-Chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference National Committee after his tenure as Chief Executive in 2005.

Lee also recognized Tung's pivotal role in enhancing exchanges between Hong Kong and the international community, thereby bolstering the city's global standing.
