Canada allows eligible work permit holders to study without permit

Canada has implemented a temporary measure allowing eligible work permit holders already residing in the country to pursue studies for up to six months without acquiring a study permit. This initiative, announced by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), aims to bolster economic growth, address labor shortages, and empower temporary workers to acquire in-demand skills while maintaining employment.

The measure targets various professions, such as tradespeople, nurses, and laboratory technicians. IRCC will notify eligible work permit holders starting this week that they can study for up to six months or until their permit expires, whichever occurs first, without needing to apply for a study permit. However, full-time studies would still necessitate a study permit.

IRCC emphasizes that this flexibility does not create a new pathway for workers to immigrate to Canada. The agency remains committed to reducing the temporary population to less than five percent of the total population by the end of 2027. IRCC believes this flexibility will enable workers to contribute to public services, construction, and other national projects.

The measure is set to remain in effect until December 31, 2027, supporting Canada's balanced and sustainable approach to immigration, aimed at strengthening the economy, meeting workforce needs, and aligning arrivals with community capacity.
