Businessman sentenced to 30 years’ jail, 24 strokes for trafficking more than 77kg of meth

IPOH, September 9 — Liew Wan Wah, a 46-year-old businessman, has been sentenced to 30 years in prison and 24 strokes of the cane, according to the High Court. The businessman was found guilty of two counts of trafficking over 77 kilograms of methamphetamine five years ago. Judge Datuk Abdul Wahab Mohamed ruled that the defence had failed to introduce any reasonable doubt during the defence case.

For the first charge, Liew was sentenced to 30 years in prison and 12 strokes of the cane for distributing 74,477.8 grammes (74.48 kg) of the drug at Gopeng Toll Plaza in the Kampar district at around 7:30 pm on June 23, 2021. The second charge involved 3,267 grammes (3.27 kg) of the same drug, which Liew allegedly distributed in the parking area near the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division Office in the Kampar district police headquarters at around 2 am on June 24, 2021.

The charges were brought under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which, when read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code, is punishable by the death penalty or life imprisonment with whipping of at least 15 times. Deputy public prosecutor Yasinnisa Begam Seeni Mohideen represented the prosecution, while Liew was represented by lawyer P. Ravee.
