Atwima-Techiman residents decry poultry farm nuisance as assembly sues farmer over siting of farm

The Kwadaso Municipal Assembly has sued a resident of Atwima-Techiman for causing a public nuisance by improperly raising chickens in a residential area. The dispute arose after local residents complained about the offensive odor and loud noises produced by the backyard poultry farm. They claimed the situation was unbearable and negatively impacted their health, with issues such as sleepless nights, breathing difficulties, and skin irritations.

Children and the elderly were particularly affected by the stench and lack of proper waste management. The affected community members also expressed concerns over potential outbreaks of sanitation-related diseases due to the presence of flies.

The Environmental Health and Sanitation Unit of the assembly conducted an inspection and found the farm to be in violation of environmental bye-laws. They provided the farmer with a notice to rectify the situation, but he refused to comply. The Assembly then sought legal action at the Twedie Court, which has since been temporarily withdrawn until the farmer agrees to the conditions.

The Assembly has now returned the case to court, with a final judgment expected by the end of the month. The Municipal Coordinating Director, Mr. Francis Adu-Boateng, revealed that the farm was not registered with the Assembly and lacked the necessary permits to operate in a residential area. He assured residents that the Assembly will enforce compliance with the environmental standards to protect public health and improve the community's living conditions.
