Argentina launches legal action against oil firms for Falklands drilling

Argentina has initiated legal proceedings against Israeli firm Navitas and Canadian company Eco Atlantic over oil drilling activities in disputed Falkland Islands waters, without obtaining official authorization from Buenos Aires. This move comes days after US President Donald Trump hinted at a potential shift in Washington's stance on the long-standing territorial dispute between the UK and Argentina.

The Falklands, a British overseas territory also claimed by Argentina as Las Malvinas, have been a flashpoint in the political landscape, reigniting emotions that overshadowed Argentina's recent World Cup triumph. The criminal complaint filed by Argentine President Javier Milei targets key figures within both Navitas and Eco Atlantic, including shareholders and directors, for their alleged involvement in the unauthorized exploration activities in the North Malvinas basin.

The Sea Lion oil field, the focus of the dispute, sits approximately 220km from the Falkland Islands. Argentina's legal actions follow its 2011 law, which imposes stringent penalties for unauthorized exploration activities in its continental shelf, including up to 15 years in prison. The Falklands, located around 600km east of Argentina's southernmost tip, have a history of conflict, culminating in a 10-week war between Britain and Argentina in 1982, which resulted in significant casualties on both sides.

In recent years, the islands have become a point of contention once again, with US President Trump's comments on shifting support adding fuel to the fire.
