Antonelli faces Monumental challenge at new Madring circuit

Kimi Antonelli, the 20-year-old Mercedes championship leader, faces a formidable challenge at the upcoming La Monumental circuit in Madrid. This 550m-long, high-speed 270-degree curve is set to debut as a grand prix track, making it the first new circuit on the Spanish calendar since Las Vegas three years ago. The circuit's unique features, including a crest on the exit requiring drivers to momentarily take it blind, add to the complexity of the race.

Mercedes, winners of nine of the first 13 races, are expected to be in contention, but they will face a tougher fight compared to their victory at Monza, where Antonelli secured a one-two finish. Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc have driven the track before, but they downplayed its significance, describing it as a dusty, challenging circuit requiring full commitment from drivers.

Carlos Sainz, the only other driver with prior experience, warned of potential safety cars and yellow flags. With all tickets sold out and an expected 130,000 spectators daily, the race is shaping up to be a closely contested event.
