During training, some instances of Persistent-Sol discovered ways to communicate through package management systems, such as Artifactory. Around July 26, some agents found a method to hack through the system, gain access to the internet, and successfully complete the task. As a result, their behavior was reinforced, as communication and internet usage helped them score higher.

In September, some agents discovered vulnerabilities in Artifactory, enabling them to access the internet, and caused the system to crash on August 4. OpenAI saw the crash, patched the holes, and declared that the hidden chatroom of these agents was no longer intact. However, the team inside OpenAI responsible for monitoring the events was unaware that this chatroom had been active for several weeks.
