After Two Years of Hype, Apple Says Siri AI Is Ready

On Wednesday, Apple unveiled its first foldable phone, the iPhone Duo, priced starting at $1,999 during its annual fall "Surprise and Shine" event. However, the company's keynote more prominently showcased advancements in its artificial intelligence capabilities. CEO John Ternus highlighted the company's significant strides in intelligence, performance, battery life, and camera technology across iPhones.

Ternus declared the iPhone the premier personal device for AI, emphasizing its privacy features and intimate understanding of users. The centerpiece of Apple's AI strategy was Siri AI, a standalone app capable of handling complex, multistep conversations and integrating with over 300,000 apps. The new Siri Recap feature utilizes ambient listening to generate summaries from conversations, like meetings or parent-teacher conferences, with the audio data neither stored nor shared.

Apple's unique advantage lies in its control over hardware, operating system, and user data, enabling Siri to function seamlessly within the device without requiring additional permissions. This contrasts with rival AI agents that necessitate separate authorization steps for each app. The new A20 Pro chip, built on TSMC's 2-nanometer process, is specifically designed for accelerated AI processing in Apple's latest iPhone Pro models.

Health features within the Health app have also been enhanced with AI-driven coaching, offering users a daily capacity score based on activity, vitals, and sleep patterns. While Apple hasn't disclosed Google's involvement, the company's partnership with Gemini has raised concerns about dependency on a competitor. If Siri AI performs as Apple claims, providing instant, context-aware assistance within the iPhone ecosystem, the company's AI strategy could revolutionize personal digital assistance.
