Accra Mayor’s relative, 5 others fined for trading during National Sanitation Day

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has imposed fines totaling GH¢1,100 on six food vendors, including a relative of Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey, for trading during the National Sanitation Day exercise in September. The vendors, operating at Okaishie and in front of UTC and Makola Mall, were sanctioned for engaging in business instead of participating in the sanitation exercise on Saturday.

Mayor Allotey confirmed that the decision to fine his relative was intentional, emphasizing that enforcement of sanitation directives would be carried out without bias or favoritism. He stated that the action aimed to convey that the law applies equally to all, regardless of personal connections. Mayor Allotey stressed that the sanitation exercise is not merely about penalizing offenders but also about fostering a shift in attitude towards sanitation and promoting collective responsibility for maintaining a clean Accra.

He urged businesses and residents to utilize the designated sanitation day to clean their surroundings before resuming their regular activities. According to the Mayor, the exercise seeks to encourage residents, traders, and businesses to actively participate in keeping the city clean, highlighting the Assembly's commitment to enforcing the directives.
