3 Southeast Asian countries among best destinations for retirees in 2026

Three Southeast Asian nations emerged as top destinations for retirees in 2026, according to the 2026 Global Relocation Index. Malaysia topped the rankings with a score of 75.8 out of 100, followed by Panama and Portugal. Thailand secured the fourth position, while the Philippines claimed the eighth spot. The index evaluated 192 countries and territories based on 24 metrics divided into four pillars: financial and tax, livability and health, safety and stability, and settling and opportunity.

Healthcare quality carried the most weight, accounting for 9% of the overall ranking, followed by foreign-income tax treatment at 8.5%, cost of living at 7.5%, street safety at 7.5%, and healthcare access cost at 7.0%. Malaysia's appeal to retirees was attributed to its low living costs, accessible healthcare, and financial advantages.

However, concerns were raised about street safety and the rule of law. Despite ranking third in the broader relocation index, Malaysia led in global rankings for digital nomads. Thailand ranked fourth globally and second in Southeast Asia, excelling in affordability, digital infrastructure, and healthcare. The Philippines, with a score of 71.6, was the third Southeast Asian country in the global top 10, benefiting from affordability and housing.

Brunei, Cambodia, Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Laos also featured in the global rankings, with Brunei ranking 11th, Cambodia 16th, Singapore 27th, Indonesia 58th, Vietnam 76th, and Laos 91st.
