2027: Sokoto CP warns political parties against violence, illegal conduct

On Wednesday, the Sokoto State Commissioner of Police, Hayatu Shafa, addressed political parties and their supporters, cautioning them against violence, hate speech, misinformation, and other actions that could jeopardize the 2027 elections. At a meeting with party chairmen and representatives, Shafa emphasized the importance of peaceful campaigning and collaboration with security forces to ensure the elections transpire without unrest.

The commissioner stressed that the upcoming vote should be seen as a contest of ideas, rather than a physical battle, and urged politicians to enable voters to exercise their right to choose their leaders freely. "We are gathered here today not as rivals but as custodians of Sokoto State’s future. The elections ahead are not a war to be won by force. They are a contest of ideas to be won by the will of the people," Shafa declared.

Shafa directed political leaders to discourage abusive campaigns, fake news, and character assassination, urging parties to concentrate on their manifestos and policies. He also cautioned that party leaders would be held accountable for the actions of their supporters, including youth groups and social media influencers. "If your supporters, be they youth wings or social media influencers, disturb the peace, we will hold you personally accountable. The days of looking the other way are over," Shafa warned.

The police commissioner affirmed that the police would enforce the Electoral Act 2022 against any violations of electoral laws. He also encouraged political parties to share information with security agencies regarding emerging threats and potential flashpoints. Shafa further cautioned politicians against endangering voters in areas affected by banditry, such as Sabon Birni, Rabah, Kebbe, Tureta, and Isa.
