Zelensky gives cautious backing to Trump envoys' 'good' ideas to end Russia's war

U.S. President Donald Trump's envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, shared some promising ideas with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to potentially end Russia's war against Ukraine, according to reports on September 8th. However, the feasibility of these proposals remains uncertain for now. Zelensky indicated that he is still determining whether these ideas can be effectively implemented.

His comments came after Witkoff and Kushner traveled to Moscow and Kyiv with revised peace proposals in an effort to restart negotiations that have stalled for months.

During these talks, the sensitive issues of grain and energy were brought up, which could play a crucial role in any potential agreement. Grain and energy are sensitive matters for both Ukraine and Russia. Grain and energy have been frequent targets of attacks from both sides throughout the conflict. Ukraine has struck Russia's energy infrastructure, while Moscow has targeted Ukrainian power plants and substations.

The urgency of this issue is heightened as the country braces for another harsh winter, expecting Russia to intensify attacks on its energy grid. Last winter, Ukraine experienced a major Russian assault on its energy infrastructure, leading to widespread power outages and freezing temperatures.

Grain has also emerged as a contentious issue. Russia has escalated attacks on shipping routes in the Black Sea, including deadly strikes on civilian grain ships. This campaign has led to reduced exports, higher costs, and a dwindling number of vessels willing to dock at Ukrainian ports. Zelensky emphasized that these issues are not just important for Ukraine and Russia, but for the entire world and many other countries such as India, the Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Asia. He stated that Ukraine is willing to find a compromise on these pressing global issues.

Zelensky expressed hope for a meeting with Trump around September 20th, where he intends to discuss Ukraine's need for additional anti-ballistic missiles. Ukraine currently lacks missiles capable of intercepting Russian ballistic missiles, which Moscow has increasingly employed against Ukrainian cities. Zelensky did not disclose the specifics of the proposed support package but mentioned that an agreement had been reached with the American side to prepare everything and then communicate with Europeans.

Despite the renewed U.S. push, the main obstacles to a peace deal remain unchanged. The negotiations have been effectively stalled since earlier this year as Russia continues to reject a ceasefire along the existing front lines and insists that Ukraine relinquish Donbas, the strategically important eastern region that is partially occupied, and forgo its NATO membership aspirations.

The Kremlin has not shown any willingness to compromise on its territorial demands. Meanwhile, Ukrainian officials warn that Russia is preparing to escalate attacks on Ukrainian cities and its energy infrastructure during the winter. One Ukrainian official stated that President Putin still hopes to break Ukraine this winter and is not prepared to agree to anything.
