Zahid: University autonomy must come with accountability

KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Prime Minister Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, also Umno president, has emphasized that greater university autonomy must be paired with measurable accountability for the quality of learning and graduate mobility. Following the repeal of the Universities and University Colleges Act 1971 (Auku), Zahid believes that attention should now be directed towards creating a new legal and governance framework for higher education institutions.

As a former student activist, he hopes that with Auku no longer in place, students will lead in knowledge and professionalism. Zahid stressed that the new framework should grant universities more autonomy while ensuring they are held accountable for their performance and outcomes. He believes students should participate in decision-making and contribute innovative ideas rather than relying on protest methods.

Zahid reiterated that the new legislation should not restrict students or academics in any way. He placed trust in Higher Education Minister Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir to transform their responsibilities and aspirations into action during the Malay Education Convention. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced the abolition of Auku last month to enable students to express their views, think independently, and engage in politics.
