‘Win a medal for India’: Four-year-old's message to Indian mother chasing Asian Games medal

Indian discus thrower Seema Kaliramna is dedicating her life to achieving a medal for her country at the upcoming Asian Games in Japan. The 27-year-old frequently spends long periods away from her four-year-old son, Rudra, while preparing for the event. She admits that one constant question she grapples with is whether she is robbing her son of a part of his childhood.

Seema's husband, Ravinder, also serves as her coach. Consequently, Rudra spends most of his time with his grandparents while his parents train at the national camp in Patiala. This situation often leaves Seema feeling torn between her ambition to win a medal and her desire to be with her son. He once told her, "I want to be with you," which represents the toughest aspect of her journey.

In recent years, Seema has missed out on the simple pleasure of having a relaxed family meal with her loved ones. She estimates that she has not enjoyed such a meal in three to four years. Her own personal struggle became evident when she developed severe arthritis after the birth of Rudra in 2022. Earlier this year, she won a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games, overcoming her health issues to return to top form.

Seema's motivation to pursue her dream comes from her son, who constantly tells her, "You have to win a medal for the country." This message gives her the strength to persevere through the numerous sacrifices she has made for her sport.
