Waterdogs’ rookies help send Philadelphia back to PLL Championship

The Philadelphia Waterdogs secured a spot in the PLL U.S. Bank Championship with a 13-10 victory over the Boston Cannons on Monday at Zions Bank Stadium. Despite a shaky start, the Dogs showcased their resilience and adaptability, finding various ways to triumph in the face of adversity. Rookie goalkeeper Sean Byrne played a crucial role, making 14 saves in his first playoff appearance, despite Boston missing 18 of their last 19 shots in the first half.

Six rookies made their playoff debuts for Philadelphia in the semifinals, contributing to seven of the team's 13 goals. Kyle Lewis led the charge with a hat trick, becoming only the 17th rookie in PLL history to score three goals in a playoff game. His performance, along with contributions from Josh Yago, Matt Collison, and Silas Richmond, helped ease concerns about the Dogs' scoring ability outside their MVP front-runners, CJ Kirst and Michael Sowers.

CJ Kirst stepped up in the final minutes, scoring a goal with 1:58 left to seal the win and send Philadelphia to the semifinals. His performance reaffirmed his status as an essential player, and coach Michael Sowers emphasized the importance of Kirst's leadership and experience. With two weeks to prepare, the Waterdogs aim to build on their strong showing and continue their championship run, now facing the Western Conference champion Denver Outlaws.
