In the wake of the Saxon-Anhalt state election, differing interpretations emerge regarding the potential reform initiatives to be examined. The Union and SPD have contrasting conclusions to draw from the results. The focus lies on contentious reforms concerning pensions, sick leave, care, and taxes. The SPD firmly acknowledges these issues have unsettled constituents, ultimately contributing to the AfD's significant victory in Saxon-Anhalt.

SPD leader Bärbel Bas asserts that these topics have also led to a clear rejection of the federal government in the election.

Bas argues that the coalition must revisit and discuss the unpopular reforms, stating there will be no further continuation. In contrast, the CDU presents a different perspective, expressing the need to communicate on how to maintain the reform course within the federal government. Union faction chief Thorsten Frei clarifies that continuing the numerous reforms at a high pace is not a valid conclusion.

SPD maintains that they do not fundamentally question the reforms, emphasizing that abandoning the federal government to chaos is not their objective. However, they firmly state that changes are necessary despite this stance. Potential topics for discussion include early retirement after 45 contribution years. Although no legislation has been drafted, and a complete abolition of the above-45 contributions-free pension is unlikely, extensive transitional rules and exceptions are anticipated.

The SPD will also deliberate on how to address the long-time insured population when modifying pension policies, a point emphasized by Merz, who has always intended to address this issue but wants it to be clearer.
