Videos capture massive fires at Saratov oil refinery following drone strike

On September 8, Ukrainian drones allegedly targeted the Saratov Oil Refinery in Russia, as reported by residents sharing footage on social media and analyzed by monitoring groups. Saratov is situated around 460 kilometers (285 miles) east of Ukraine's border with Russia, near Luhansk Oblast in eastern Ukraine. Locals captured images and videos of the attack, which included explosions and a fire at the refinery. Independent Russian outlet Astra confirmed the strike based on geolocation analysis of the footage.

Saratov Oblast Governor Roman Busargin stated that the drone attack caused damage to civilian infrastructure and that there were initial reports of casualties, though he did not identify the target of the strike. The Kyiv Independent was unable to independently verify the reports at the time of publication.

Rosneft, the owner of the Saratov refinery, stated that it is a significant oil-processing facility with an annual processing capacity of about 4.8 million tons. The plant produces over 20 types of petroleum products, including gasoline, diesel fuel, fuel oil, and bitumen. Ukraine's General Staff confirmed that the Saratov Oil Refinery aids in supplying the Russian military.

They reported a successful strike on the facility on August 2 and a previous strike on July 8 that forced the plant to halt processing after its only crude distillation unit was damaged.

The reported Saratov strike underscores the economic impact of Ukrainian attacks on Russian refineries, which have contributed to fuel shortages and sharply reduced Russian refinery output over the summer. The attack occurred as Russia launched a barrage of ballistic missiles and jet-powered drones at Kyiv overnight, ending a brief diplomatic pause in attacks on the capital.
