US targets Iran’s entire aviation sector with fresh sanctions

The United States has recently imposed new sanctions on 27 Iranian airlines and several associated companies in countries such as the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, Malaysia, and Kazakhstan. These sanctions target entities accused of supporting Iran's aviation sector, which is alleged to be utilized for transporting weapons, personnel, and illicit cargo. According to the US Treasury Department, these actions effectively isolate the entire Iranian aviation industry from global markets.

The conflict between the US and Iran escalated in late February following US and Israeli strikes that killed Iran's supreme leader and senior military officials. In response, Iran blocked the strategic Strait of Hormuz, contributing to a rise in global oil prices and further intensifying the Middle East crisis. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent emphasized the determination of the US to sever Iran's financial support, stating that under Operation Economic Outcast, the country pledged severe consequences for those providing financial backing to the Iranian regime.

The sanctions target companies involved in various aspects of Mahan Air, an Iranian airline allegedly linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). These companies have allegedly contributed to Mahan Air's international flights, aircraft procurement, and other operations. Additionally, the sanctions extend to cargo service providers and general sales agents that have collaborated with Mahan Air.

In total, the Treasury sanctions cover 36 targets associated with Iran's aviation sector, effectively cutting off the industry from international financial transactions. This move is part of a broader effort by the United States to isolate Iran economically and economically counteract the ongoing conflict between the two nations.
