UK PM denounces ‘politics of poison’ after anti-migrant protests in southern England

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham denounced the "politics of poison" seeping into the streets after anti-migrant protests erupted in southern England, where demonstrators attempted to block the arrival of migrants. The incident occurred in Portsmouth, Hampshire, a region authorities believe is becoming a new route for small boat crossings.

Burnham urged his Labour Party lawmakers to shift their focus from fear to positivity and hope, emphasizing the responsibility to prevent the spread of such divisive rhetoric. Thousands of asylum seekers have been crossing the English Channel in small, rudimentary boats, typically between Calais and Dover, where the distance between the French and English coasts is shortest.

On Sunday, British coastguards rescued a boat carrying 140 people that had departed from the Normandy coast. Around 200 masked demonstrators gathered in Portsmouth, disrupting the migrants' disembarkation and blocking roads. The Home Office condemned the "intimidating and thuggish behavior" witnessed in Portsmouth, clarifying that the right to peaceful protest is fundamental to democracy but must not cross into disorder.

The demonstration marked the second significant anti-migrant protest in two days, following a similar event on Saturday that blocked access to the Port of Dover. Local Conservative lawmaker Joe Robertson expressed concern over the rare arrivals of small boats in Hampshire, calling for a better understanding of the situation. The police and crime commissioner for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, Donna Jones, highlighted the inadequacy of Portsmouth's facilities to receive and process migrants arriving via this method, urging the government to ensure the southern coast of Britain's security.

Despite no evidence suggesting smugglers have changed their strategy, the government maintains efforts to curb these dangerous crossings, including deploying additional officers to French beaches.
