UK flight chaos: Nearly 1,000 flights disrupted — are UAE services affected?

On Tuesday, more than 1,000 flights were canceled across major UK airports due to a technical issue with Britain's air traffic control system, according to flight monitoring website Flightradar24. Inbound flights to London airports, Manchester, and Birmingham experienced significant disruptions compared to the previous Tuesday. The problem originated from a NATS ATC facility and led to widespread cancellations, affecting numerous airlines such as British Airways, EasyJet, KLM, and Lufthansa.

Passengers faced lengthy waits on the tarmac before their flights were ultimately canceled, with many expressing frustration over inadequate communication from airlines.

Stansted and City airports in London, as well as facilities in Manchester, Birmingham, Gatwick, and Scotland, were notably impacted. Budget airline EasyJet stated that some of its flights were unable to operate due to the system failure, causing delays across Europe. Heathrow's website indicated that many short-haul flights to European destinations were either canceled or delayed. The exact cause of the technical problem remained unclear at the time.

The disruption raises concerns for thousands of passengers traveling between the UAE and the UK, particularly with Emirates, Etihad Airways, and Air Arabia operating direct services to British airports. While checks on Tuesday evening did not reveal widespread cancellations of UAE-operated flights to the UK specifically linked to the NATS failure, some services did experience delays.

Emirates, Etihad Airways, and Air Arabia all have direct flights from major UAE cities to UK airports such as London Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, and Manchester.

Despite NATS implementing a fix, the issue has caused ongoing disruptions, with potential knock-on delays and schedule changes still possible. Passengers traveling between the UAE and the UK are advised to check their individual flight status directly with their airline before heading to the airport. Edinburgh Airport reported that no flights were currently operating due to an IT issue, while the Los Angeles airport faced a cyberattack, and Heathrow experienced cyberattacks resulting in additional delays for European air travel.
